Data Management in the 21st Century.

By Andrew Lewis P. Eng., Director Product Strategy

I joined WaterTrax almost a year ago after working for 18 years as a regulator or an operations engineer of water and wastewater systems. As I was researching the company prior to joining, I also did a bit of research about current data management practices in my industry. The following is a brief summary of my findings.

In recent years, many new Federal, State and Provincial Rules and Regulations have been brought in that requires more frequent testing of an increasing number of parameters. However, data management, a critical tool in the multi-barrier approach to ensuring a safe supply of drinking water, appears to be largely overlooked or marginalized.

Water quality data is something we all rely on to make decisions on today’s operations and tomorrow’s upgrades of our water systems. As a regulator or an operations engineer responsible for making these decisions, I always asked myself “Is the data I have correct? Is it all there? Can I use it to get the answers that I need?” Often the answer was NO, NO and NO!

A recent survey of drinking water utilities showed that the majority still use paper or at best desktop software to manage drinking water data (see table below). The problem with both these types of systems is that they still rely heavily on humans to receive, enter, check and interpret the data thus leaving room for errors at each of these steps. As well, these systems severely limit our ability to share or report the data amongst multiple users to allow timely and effective decisions.

WaterTrax is designed to consolidate and report out on water quantity and quality data from water and wastewater systems and automate many aspects of data collection and reporting. This is what excited me about joining WaterTrax because I found a solution that turns all those NOs into YES’!
